A Murder investigation is underway after a man, who was found with multiple stab wounds at a flat in Northfield on Sunday 24 November, died in hospital on New Year’s Eve.

Emergency services were called to the address on Norrington Road just after 6pm, where 71-year-old Barry Wilkins was found seriously injured.

He was treated for stab injuries to his stomach, back and shoulder and remained in a critical but stable condition in hospital for 38 days until his death on 31 December.

The case is now being treated as murder and a forensic post-mortem will take place tomorrow (3 January).

Susan Hughes appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on 26 November charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

The 47-year-old, of Linley Grove, Kings Heath, heard claims that she stabbed Barry Wilkins seven times and was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 4 March.

West Midlands Police Detective Inspector Simon Astle said: “This was an isolated incident and we understand the defendant and injured man were known to each other.”
