Tipton residents are being urged to help police trace a dog and its owner after a woman was bitten as she tried to protect her family pet.
The woman was on her way to collect her daughter from school at around 3pm on 10 March, with the family’s Jack Russell, when the pair were attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier being walked by two women, on Grace Road.
The 32-year-old spotted the dog, which she thought looked aggressive, coming towards her and so moved to pick up little Scamp, but the Staffy went for both the dog and the woman, biting her arm and the Terrier’s leg.
The Bull Terrier only let go when a local resident ran out of her house to help and threw water over the animal.
Sergeant Leighton Shingles, from Sandwell Investigation Team, said: “This was a very nasty attack which has traumatised a whole family.
“Their pet was badly injured and is facing possibly losing its leg and the woman was very distressed about the incident.
“We want to hear from anyone who may have seen this dog in the Tipton area, as we assume that it is probably owned by people local to Grace Road or Princes End.
“The dog is white and was described as quite tall and muscly for the breed so could have been a cross.
“The dog is obviously powerful and appears to be dangerous and so we urge people to help us trace it to prevent any similar incidents.”
The dog was being walked by a white woman, with curly blonde hair, and she was around 5ft 5in tall.
Anyone with information should call Sandwell Investigation Team at West Bromwich police station by calling 101 or charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
