Two men have been arrested after a quick thinking widow locked herself in her garage and called the police when her house was attacked by burglars last night (11 August).

The 73-year-old was sitting in the living room of her home in Solihull just after 10pm when she heard a window smash followed by footsteps running upstairs.

Believing that she had just been burgled and that the burglars could still be inside her house she quickly grabbed her phone, locked herself in her garage for protection and dialled 999.

Officers including a dog handler were on the scene within minutes and noticed two men who had a pillow stuffed with items running along the street.

The pair were chased down by officers and a short time later two men aged 22 and 30 were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently helping police with their enquiries.

Inspector Darren Lee, from, Solihull’s investigation team, said: “Due to the quick actions of this lady we have been able to arrest two men on suspicion of burglary.

“She has only recently lost her husband and knew no-one else should be in the house.

“She locked herself in the garage and alerted the police allowing us to arrive within minutes.

“We would always encourage people to call the police if they hear or see anything suspicious and we would like to commend her for her brave and quick actions.

“Fortunately the lady was not hurt but was obviously shaken by the incident.”
